Wipeout for Wii

The new Wii Wipeout game based on the television series of the same name comes complete with all the shows favourites such as the Big Balls, Sucker Punch and the Sweeper.

It’s a great fun, and often times, hilarious game that is best played in a group (although can also be played as a single player). That is why we believe this is more of a party game rather than one for the solo player who prefers a story progression.

The graphics are good and the action is fast. As you progress through the levels the game play gets harder. This provides some challenging moments to jump or duck at the correct time while being still easy enough for children to use.

The downsides to this game are that the commentary can be rather annoying when all you really want to do is play the game. But this I guess was important to keeping the game similar to the TV show and they are voiced by the actual presenters John Anderson, John Henson and Jill Wagner which is a bonus (although sometimes the voices don’t sync up with the animations correctly).

The age group is probably mainly targeted to early teens although kids as young as eight will probably like it as well. Older gamers may not find it challenging enough.

The challenges follow the TV show pretty closely, right down to the slow motion replays so if you aren’t a fan of the show you might wonder what the fuss is all about, but true Wipeout fans will enjoy this.

You can choose to either play show mode that takes you through all the challenges, or challenge mode where you can choose a specific challenge to compete in of which there are over fifty to choose from.

If you are looking for a game with plenty of laughs to keep the kids amused then Wipeout for the Wii is a great choice.

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Released in 2007, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga for Wii is still on the bestselling list of Wii games today, and for good reason – it remains loads of fun for both children and adults alike.

This game remains a firm favourite with Wii owners and not just Star Wars fans (although without a doubt, swinging your Wii remote as a ‘light saber’ is sure to get most Star Wars fans excited – which is probably why you can purchase light saber accessories for the Wii remote).

The game itself takes around 50 hours to complete and is challenging enough for adults but also remaining simple so that kids will enjoy it also. The Lego characters are especially cute and make for some great and often times funny cut scenes.

The violence is very low and would be considered family friendly – for example when a character get’s defeated in the game, he falls apart so that the Lego pieces lie on the ground.

The game covers the entire Star Wars story (hence the Complete Saga title) and can be played in story mode or as free play (which is fun if you want to battle someone else in a quick light saber battle).

Each level of story mode can be played out numerous ways which makes the challenges interesting and also gives longevity to the game (so if in six months time you decide to play it again you can with some differences). Of course the main missions and boss fights do remain the same however to allow the storyline to progress properly.

There are also lots of secrets and hidden areas to uncover for those that like to explore.

Overally we love Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga for Wii because it is highly addictive and lots of fun. It is simple enough for kids but also challenging enough for adults to enjoy as well. And of course the Lego characters are just so darn cute.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

One of the first Mario & Sonic Olympic Games, this Wii game was released in 2007 for the (then upcoming) Beijing Olympic Games but still proves a big seller today and has also produced spin off games such as Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Mario and Sonic at the Summer Games.

To start the game you can choose to play with one of the cast from the Mario or Sonic games, or you can choose your own Mii character. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses that are revealed as the events are played (some are faster, others stronger etc).

This is one of the few Wii games that feature Luigi – a popular Nintendo character. Usually Luigi is just in the Sega or Nintendo DS games, and hasn’t featured heavily on the Wii so it’s good to see him pop up as a playable character in this game.

The games themselves are your typical Olympic style games such as running, rowing, swimming, archery, skeet shooting, high jump etc. You only start with a handful of the games and you then unlock the rest as you progress.

The game can be played either solo in which you are competing against computer AI characters or with up to 3 other players for some group fun.

From there you can choose which style of play you would prefer:

- Single Event where you can choose which event you want to play
- Circuit Mode in which you can either choose four events or have the computer randomly select them for you.
- Mission Mode (which is just for solo players) for those that like to play storylines and complete challenges to progress in the game.

The games themselves are lots of fun and very interactive. Some of them are quite challenging however so are better suited to adults than children who might get frustrated at the level of precision required (although there is options to play on beginner mode which makes things easier).

There is provision for many hours of game play and is especially fun played in a group so overall we thoroughly recommend Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.

Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2010 Bundle with Gun

If you are looking for a shooter that incorporates game hunting then Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2010 could be right for you. This bundle comes with a gun to make play easier. It looks like a sawn off shotgun and once you’ve set it up it’s a breeze to use. It’s made of bright orange lightweight plastic.

The gun is what makes this game more fun so I recommend getting this bundle if you want Big Game Hunter, as it makes it more interesting than just pointing the Wii remote at the screen.

The game itself is very intuitive and the animals respond lifelike. The action and pace picks up as the game progresses as you would expect in such a game.

You can choose to play solo or multiplayer (it’s more fun with a group) and suits ages 10 and up.

It’s a first person shooter and you either play through ‘mission’ mode or ‘shooting gallery’ mode. In the story based mission mode you play Jack Wilde, a new hunter and are given tasks to do as you progress through the levels. Each level provides more challenges and rewards based on your performance.

As the levels progress and the game gets harder (you’ll need to walk around and track the birds and animals to find them) it also becomes more fun.

You can change weapons and also choose where you want to hit the animal – such as the heart, back, chest or head.

In shooting gallery mode, it’s much like the arcade version in which you have to shoot and kill certain animals in the timeframe given. There are 13 different shooting galleries to choose from.

The graphics itself could be improved, but after playing it for a while you don’t seem to care that much because the fun story and game play make up for it.

Mario Kart with Wii Wheel Customer Review

Excerpts from the Complete Mario Kart Wiiview by Aaron D Fridley (Waterloo, NY)

“I will go in depth with “Mario Kart Wii” as I have finished the game, and I was an avid player of the 64 version. If you were too then you would understand this review, if not, it may be hard to follow along.

Mario Kart Wii Review = 5 stars (first 5 star Wii game I have given. More reviews to come)

I give this game 5 stars as it is the best game for its genre. It is unique, full of strategy, and replayability. And when compared to the 64 version, great improvements have been made to Mario Kart Wii such that there is no reason why to not give it 5 stars this time around.”

Wii Sports Resort

This is the first Wii game to show off Wii’s new MotionPlus.

Wii Sports Resort is the long anticipated sequel to the original Wii Sports games which Wii fans fell in love with.

This time all the sports are set on a tropical island and include fun activiites such as Disc Dog (a frisbee throwing game), Sword fighting, and Jet Skiing.

In fact 12 new games in total are included on the disc. This is a great game overall and a well deserved addition to your Wii game library.

About Wii Sports Resort

Take a vacation at home!

Let’s first talk about the new Wii Motion Plus (which comes with the Wii Sports Resort game). It is basically a little gadget that you plug into the bottom of your original Wii Remote (or Wii-mote as the cool kids are calling it) that gives much more precise tracking and thus a better playing experience.

You arrive at the ‘resort’ by sky diving in and then you can choose your favorite Mii or create a new one. Like most Wii games, not every activity is available immediately and you will need to unlock some of them to play them.

Some of my favorite Wii Games include Sky Diving where the object of the game is to connect with other players so you can get the perfect photo opportunity. You get a perfect score if you can connect up four players with bonus points if everyone is looking at the camera at the moment the photo is taken.

You can play with up to 4 players and by far the hardest of the multiplayer games is canoeing which requires you and your partner to be in perfect sync to race (just like the cycling game does as well).

If you are a fan of the TV show American Gladiators then you’ll love playing the Swordplay games in which you hold a sword (which looks more like a light sabre to me) and try and knock your opponent off the board you are both on to win. Of course if you fall off (or get knocked off) your opponent will win instead.

Full list of all the games:

Here is a list of all 12 games that you get with the Wii Sports Resort game:

Archery
Bowling
Basketball
Canoeing
Cycling
Frisbee (Disc Dog)
Golf
Jet skiing
Parachuting
Ping Pong
Sword fighting (Sword Play)
Wake boarding

If you are a fan of the original Wii Sports but are getting a little bored of the games, then you will love this game.  Find out more at Amazon.

Wii Fit Plus

It’s time to dust off the balance board because you’ll be back doing Wii Fit and now Wii Fit Plus is more fun than ever.

Now I must tell you that Wii Fit Plus isn’t actually a ‘sequel’ to the original Wii Fit, but it contains many similar games, such as yoga and strength training, but takes it to a new level.

There are also a lot of new games and additions here to make it a much better purchase. I’m saying this to those people who haven’t yet got the first game because once you have this one, you’ll never use the first again.

But for those that do have the original Wii Fit, you can easily convert all your profile and workout data through to Plus.

Wii Fit Plus Video

What’s New in Wii Fit Plus?

So let’s first go over what improvements have been made and what’s new in this version.

Firstly, taking ideas from EA Sports Active, they now have preset workouts that you can choose from rather than just choose random exercises (which you can still do as well if you want).

You can choose your workout routine based on different goals you want to acheive: weight loss, specific exercises for upper or lower body, strength and so on.

You still have the four main categories: Yoga, Aerobics, Strength Training and Balance Games but there are more variety and challenge to many of the games.

And of course the new games.

The New Games in Wii Fit Plus:

Here is a list of the 15 new games that you get with the Wii Fit Plus:

Perfect 10 – You have to bump your hips into the numbered ‘mushrooms’ to make up either 10, 15 or 20, depending on what is required.

Island Cycling – You cycle around the island collecting flags by using the remote to steer and moving your feet on the Wii Balance Board to ‘cycle’.

Rythym Kung-Fu – You need to mimic various kung-fu moves on screen using the remote, nunchuck and balance board. This game is really cheesy and totally fun.

Driving Range – A golf game which is surprising good.

Segway Circuit – You will drive a Segway around the island trying to pop balloons.

Bird’s Eye Bulls-Eye – In this game you need to flap your arms to fly from target to target to collect points. I’m not sure how the wii balance board picks up the flapping but it does and it’s super fun.

Snowball Fight – You will be throwing snowballs at invading Mii’s and dodging to avoid getting hit in return.

Obstacle Course – Really fun game where you run around an obstacle course avoiding wrecking balls, jumping over falling logs and walking sideways.

Tilt City – You need to tilt both yourself on the Wii board and the remote to get the balls in the containers.

Rhythm Parade – You are the drummer in a band and have to march and drum in time to the music

Big Top Juggling – You’ll be on top of a big ball while juggling other balls.

Skateboard Arena – Skateboarding around a track which includes ramps and rails.

Table Tilt Plus – Similar to the one in Wii Fit original, you need to get your ball through the holes.

Balance Bubble Plus – Similar to the original Bubble game, you are in a bubble and need to navigate around a maze.

Basic Run Plus – Again an extended version of the jogging game which gives you new tracks. This time you are also quizzed on what you saw on your jog.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games

If you liked Mario and Sonic at the Summer Games then this game is so much better.

There is such a wide variety of different and fun games that you can play with Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games that both you and the kids will be entertained for hours.

You can choose to play alone, against one opponent or with a whole team of players.

Some of the fun games include:

  • Ski Jumping
  • Snowboarding
  • Figure Skating
  • Bobsledding
  • Ice Hockey
  • Dream Ski Cross
  • Slalom Skiing
  • Speed Skating and many more.

You get around 12 initial games and then even more games are unlocked as you play. These new ‘dream’ games include both brand new games and variations on the original’s. You can also unlock special ski’s, snowboards and outfits for your Mii.

If you are playing in a group there are also 3 special party games that will have your guests laughing as they try and compete with each other.

If you have a Wii Balance Board then you can also use this in some of the games (it’s not compulsory though).

Overall it’s a good family game as there are different levels for most ages and it’s easier to unlock the extra games than with say Mario Kart.

If you are looking for a game that will keep the kids entertained all day then they’ll have a bloast with Mario & Sonic Olympic Winter Games.
